"The possibility of a strong earthquake in Kamchatka in the next 5 years is 45 %," said Sergey Fedotov, an academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

He made a speech on Tuesday at the meeting on seismic and volcanic activity of the Expert Council of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia.

"The Kuril-Kamchatka Arc is one of the most active and dangerous seismic zones on the Earth. The possibility of a 7-9 point strong earthquake in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky area in the next 5 years is about 45 %."

According to the academician, 1/4 of the buildings in Kamchatka is not prepared for such a strong earthquake. The buildings were built in the middle of the last century and can withstand magnitude 8 earthquake.

"It can cause extensive damage," said the academician.

As Interfax reports, Sergey Fedotov suggests continuing the examination of seismic activity in the region. "A long-term forecast is justified. The Ministry of Emergency Situations will have time for urgent preparedness."
